Snow, snow, and more snow

M.M. (age older gentleman) and C.J. (age 3) worked together this week to help shovel the snow from a neighbor's driveway. The neighbor is an very old man who just recently had surgery. This sweet man is unable to do heavy hard work-but M.M. and C.J.  were up to the task!!

Thankful!!!!

My wonderful grandmother shared a story with me that I am excited to share with all of you.  On this year's cold Thanksgiving day, she was driving in town and saw a man walking on the sidewalk with only a worn down hooded sweatshirt.  She tells me that he was carrying a very large bag and appeared to be fatigued and in need of help.

She was on her way to our family thanksgiving celebration which always involves a warm house, lots of food, and great company.  She decided that she needed to turn around and offer a small gift of hope to this stranger.  She safely pulled up near this gentleman and offered him a small monetary gift.  He gratefully took it and was very thankful to her for her kindness!

She said she hoped this man was able to buy a warm meal but regardless of how he spent the money she felt the small gift was a way for her to show her appreciaton for the many blessings in her life!!

Spreading the Christmas Cheer

Act of Kindness #59: MM, KM, and EM have chosen to sponsor a little person that needs some extra love at Christmas time.  The family bought some warm Scooby Doo Fleece pajamas in little people size, along with some warm socks to match.  In addition, some games and toys found their way into the shopping cart.  I am positive that their deed will make a merrier holiday season for this little buddy.

Warm belly, Warm heart!!

M.M. and K.M. decided to do some cooking this week!! After a lot of slicing and dicing, they were able to make a double batch of stew which they donated to a local homeless shelter.  This donation has to be a welcomed gift to the shelter, especially as the weather turns colder.

Halloween Surprise!!!!

AoK #57:

C.J. got a very unexpected surprise in the mail just after Halloween. This little boy was unlucky enough to be sick on Halloween and was unable to join in on the fun of collecting candy. ....but to his surprise he got a huge box FULL of delicious treats from the "Z" family.  He was not only thrilled to get a package in the mail but even more thrilled to find that it was all candy!!! It was such a nice unexpected surprise-a perfect act of kindness!!!

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

M.B.J. is proud to share her act of kindness today. The kids at her school started a fundraiser in which students can  purchase a hand made bracelet and all of the money collected goes to cancer research.  M.B.J. was of course drawn to the bracelets but the part that makes me so proud is that she wanted to use her own money "to help support people who have cancer".  She brought in her own hard earned money  (3 dollars) to be applied to this great cause.  She tells me now every time she looks at this bracelet she will be reminded of those people she knows who have cancer and how much she loves them.

Military Package

Our family has a good friend who is currently in Military training.  M.B.J. and I sent a large care package to her this week and in the package we sent along a bunch of treats for her to share with her crew of Military Trainees.  This brave young crew is studying and training hard to become Army Medics so we just wanted to send a big thank you to them for being so brave and working so hard!!!

E.O.M. and K.R.M. both went and got their flu shots at Walgreens this year and this is why...check it out.....


Now though October 14th, when you get a flu shot or any other immunization at Walgreens, we'll
help provide a life-saving vaccine through the United Nations Foundation's Shot@Life Campaign.
Together, we can supply up to 3 million vaccines to children who need it most.

AoK #52:  G.C. reports that a friend of hers was really stressed last week and feeling overwhelmed.  G.C. so kindly offered to babysit this women's baby for a few hours so she could get caught up.  Oh what a wonderful gift for a tired and stressed out mom!!

S.C. volunteered his time to help a friend move this week.  I am sure his muscles were appreciated!  The kindness didn't stop there..G.C. pitched in as well. She took everyone's kids to the park to play so the crew could move furniture a little faster.

Locks of Love

ACT of KINDNESS #49:  My little sister, E.O.M., braved the cut yesterday. That's right..she chopped off 10" of her very long hair and will be donating that beautiful ponytail to Locks of Love.  She now has a fresh and beautiful cut for school but more importantly her hair will be donated to a child in need of a hair piece, due to an long term illness.

Just an idea...


There are many small things we can do in our daily lives that make other people’s lives easier. An example of this is to serve those who serve us.
Instead of leaving your shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot when you're at the grocery store, make someone's job easier by returning it to where it belongs. It is a small act that doesn’t take a lot of thought or energy, but your consideration and respect will be greatly appreciated!

Birthday Cakes...A MUST!!

My grandma, C.H., was in the grocery store this week and noticed a nice looking man checking out  the birthday cakes. She told us that he picked up several and examined the tags. He was there for some time but in the end he walked away without taking one.  The man proceeded to check out his small cart of groceries and then we got a very kind surprise.  C.H. approached him and handed him some cash and kindly told him that she wanted to treat for that birthday cake he was looking at.  He was so pleased and grateful that he went back and grabbed it.  Cheers for Grandma and Happy Happy Birthday to the lucky person who now gets to celebrate with a big old piece of cake!!!

OH NO!!

ACT OF KINDNESS #46: A group of us were relaxing at the beach this weekend and we noticed a poor guy chasing after his air mattress. The wind had blown the mattress very quickly across the swim area and into the dreaded "muck".  The man bravely walked through the "muck" but couldn't move fast enough through the sludge to catch the mattress.  We just couldn't watch the struggle anymore..we took the boat to rescue the mattress and returned it to the man.  The cool thing about all of this was that no one in our boat mentioned that this should be done as an act of kindness..but my 5 year old casually said, "hey we just did a nice thing..this is an act of kindness mom"

I am breaking the rules

Ok so I know that I stated in the rules that we were only going to count acts of kindness that we did for people outside of our immediate family...but....I just have to break the rules and count this one!! It was just to good to not share.

A few weekends ago I was traveling with my family and after a really fun but busy weekend I came home to find the best surprise!! Ok ready..my wonderful father and super cool tween sister had shocked me with an awesome completely unexpected surprise.  The two of them had picked up 2 trailers full of mulch and then came home and mulched my front landscaping. This is a project that I have been wanting to do for a long time but logistics never allowed me to get it done.  So I was thrilled by their efforts. This is a huge deal to me...they not only mulched but they fixed the sad, sad dirt underneath the mulch.  Oh, and it looks so much better!!!!!

What a super cool surprise! So thanks you two-I am counting it: Act of Kindness #45!!!

Reduce waste and support the less fortunate in your community by donated your used clothing to a thrift store or a local homeless shelter.  And remember the age-old saying, "One person's trash is another person's treasure."

Benefits

  • Simple articles of clothing can make a person feel clean and taken care of. Donating clothing to a shelter will make a difference in someone's life.
  • Many thrift stores, like Goodwill, use the funds earned through the sale of used clothing to support the community.

Step It Up

Adults can organize a clothing drive at your work and invite coworkers to bring their used clothing. Make it easy for others by offering to take the donations to a thrift store or shelter.
Kids can organize a clothing drive at their school. Send notes home with your classmates, asking them to bring in clothing they have outgrown. Then have a parent or teacher arrange for the clothing to be donated.

Keep It Simple

Go through your closet, and instead of throwing away items you don’t need anymore, donate them. Many organizations make it easy for you, by offering services to pick up used clothing from your house.

Our family was enjoying a nice dinner at a local resturant this week and we all noticed a nice elderly gentleman at the table next to us.  He was dining alone and he didn't seem to be bothered by my noisy children.  M.M. and K.R.M. decided that a random act of kindness was in order.  M.M. found the waiter and kindly paid for this man's dinner.

Sweet Kindness

ACT OF KINDNESS #43: I received a message from M.B.J. teacher today that said...

"M.B.J. did such a kind thing today. A classmate of hers had her carpet square stolen by another classmate. The little girl was very sad she didn't have a spot in the circle. M.B.J. quickly offered up her carpet square to the little girl.  This kind act was unprompted by any of the adults in the room.  It was so refreshing to see her jump at a chance to help cheer up one of her classmates."

Simple, sweet kindness is sometimes the best in my mind. It doesn't have to cost money or be extravagant...just an easy thought can brighten someone's day.

ONE GREAT STORY

ACT OF KINDNESS #41: This story is to good to repeat in any other way than the one that was told to me. This is a report directly from N.B...enjoy...

"Started at 9:15 am to pick up my mother's dear friend, "A". When I picked her up for doc appt. which incl. lab work, then waiting an hour for her actual visit w/doc which took another hour and as usual, I wrote everything up in her med notebook that I got for her to avoid any confusion.  Then I drove her to the opposite end of town so she could go to her favorite jeweler for a ring repair.  Finally, she was obsessed with taking advantage of a Kohl's sale on bras so she gave me the exact info on the size/style and I proceeded to call both east & west side stores and waited the usual long time for clerks to check on availability.  I brought her back home in the meantime per her request, went to my piano lesson, and then took off to west side store where they were holding what she requested, bought them and drove back to east side to deliver them to her apartment.  Of course as you may expect, she goofed on the bra info so we started the process all over again (after I asked her to hoist up her top and let me see for myself the actual and exact details of what she was trying to replicate); I drove back to west side Kohl's, made the returns and searched for correct replacements but of course they were out of stock so with the help of a great clerk, we searched online, found what she wanted and placed the order and hopefully they will be shipped directly to her.  By this time (because everything takes alot of time and no one needs to be rushed -- walker in & out of car many times, etc.) it was 5 pm.  "A" is always extremely grateful and fun to be with throughout the whole process.  And besides, she was wearing one of Mom's tops today and at random moments she talked about how much she loved Mom and that she was like her own sister and how much she missed her so I say I got several sweet "gifts" from "A" today -- I was actually the one "receiving" ..........!"

A full refrigerator

ACT OF KINDNESS #40: A close friend to our immediate family is very ill right now with a terminal illness.  This very brave woman informed my parents that she had a lot of family coming to town this week to visit with her.  She never complains about the struggles she is going through but she was very concerned that she had no food in her house to offer her incoming guests.  K.R.M. clearly understood that this friend would not have the energy to go to the grocery store and that she wouldn't feel up to meal planning. K.R.M. drove to town that night and did an awesome act of kindness!! She not only planned a big meal for this women's incoming guests but she helped fill her fridge with great snacks and some comfort food.

ACT OF KINDNESS #39: This past weekend my family and I baked some treats that we delivered to our neighbors. They are the sweetest elderly couple and I don't think they get many visitors. We rode our bikes to their house to drop off our package. I was bummed that they were not home but I am hoping the package we left on their front stoop was a unexpected surprise!

Caught by surprise....


1. L.L. caught a co-worker by surprise by bringing her a package of her favorite cookies-just because!!! What a exciting surprise!!


2. N.B. took one of my Grandmother's neighbors on a "date" to Seroogys for an unexpected treat.  They spent a good hour shopping and checking out every Easter treat and sampling every chance they got.  After the candy excursion was done, N.B. offered to drive her anywhere else she needed to go.  This elderly women doesn't have easy transportation to town so this freedom was a blessing to her. They were able to hit up the grocery store and Walgreens for her daily essentials.  N.B. told me this women was so happy not to be rushed and to be able to get everything on her list in one afternoon! N.B. even hauled all of the days purchases to her friend's apartment.  The day was an unexpected blessing for both this women and N.B.

Follow up story!!!

If you can recall back to our Act of Kindness #3, M.M. shared with us a wonderful experience he had with a stranger while at the checkout line of a store.  A women was buying items for a care package that was being sent to the troops.  M.M. donated some money to the cause to help cover her purchases.

Well, today in the Green Bay Press Gazette M.M. noticed a picture of a women that looked familiar. He read the article and discovered that it was the same women he had meet at the store in January.

Act of Kindness #32

M.B.J. worked very hard this morning to create a uplifting picture for 2 people that are close to our immediate family.  Both of these people need an abundance of support and love right now so M.B.J. created a spring flower masterpiece to brighten their day.

M.B.J. and her Papa Moose got a chance to hand deliver this artwork to the couple today. The gentleman is unable to drive because of serious injury he sustained so M.B.J., C.J, and Papa have volunteered to take him to and from several of his rehab appointments.  These visits have been so wonderful for my kids as they have learned so much about the power of helping those in need. They have learned to be patient, understanding, and caring towards others.  So proud of all of them!!!

City snow plows have been busy, busy, busy this winter.  After a recent storm, a city plow crew came through and did a really thorough job in cleaning up my street.  I made sure to email the Streets Department to say thank you to them for a job well done.  I know they get lots of complaints all the time, but I wanted them to know that I appreciate the great work they had done!!

An Important Milestone



I am proud to report that we as a family have reached an important milestone in this journey.  We collectively have completed #26 Acts of Kindness. If you remember we are all being challenged to reach 26 Acts of Kindness individually but in my mind reaching our first 26 acts together is something to celebrate!!  With our challenge only starting just over a month ago we have already done a lot of wonderful things for those around us.  A kind note, a helpful gesture, a big donation, and lending a helpful hand for support are just a few ways we have tried to make a difference.  I hope you continue to be inspired to see the good in the world and to see how big of an impact a small gesture can have on someone's day.

K.M: "I received outstanding, professional service at a lower quality, unprofessional big box store.  I was so amazed by this cashier’s great attitude, professionalism and attention to service. I looked up the phone number to the store.  I called the store. I held on the line. I reported to management what an asset this lovely woman named Becci was.  Management was thrilled to receive this kind of call.  I bet Becci will be thrilled.  I am hoping that she gets a really good parking space for employee of the month and I am happier because of this experience today.  Oh yeah!"

Help! I need somebody! Help!

S.C. was a hero last week! He drove past a group of young kids who were pulled over on the side of the road. He stopped to help them and found out that they had run out of gas. 
 Ahhh!!! We have all been there!!!  
S.C. so kindly went to the gas station, bought a gas can and some gas to share with his stranded strangers.  They offered to give him money but instead of taking it he told these kids to do an act of kindness for someone else!!!  
Hopefully this random act of kindness made a lasting impact on these kids. I can guarantee that their mother's are grateful he stopped to help!

L.L. was recently on vacation and had a really positive experience with stranger.  She tells me that they had the nicest trolly driver who went out of his way to help them.  He was so friendly and did such a wonderful job making them feel welcome!  She decided to surprise him with a big, fancy, designer cupcake!  He was soooo thrilled and said that no one has ever been that kind to him before.

C.H. wrote a note this week to an acquaintance, who is very ill.  This women needs lots of love and support right now...so C.H.'s kind thoughts and prayers is just another way for this wonderful women to know how wide her circle of support is.

A busy bee...

E.M. has been a busy little bee this week.  She contributed Act of Kindness #16 and #17 for the group. One of the students in her school volunteers for a local animal shelter. This young lady was looking for donations for the animals.  E.M. decided to contribute to her schoolmate's cause.  She will be donating some dog treats and a new collar to the shelter.  

E.M. wrote a hand-written note to one of her school teachers. This teacher's mother passed away this past week so E.M. wanted to express her sympathy.  I think this unexpected act of kindness is a sure way to show this teacher support.  So proud of you E.M!!!

A team effort...

G.C. and H.C. worked together this week to bake some delicious cookies. S.C. suggested that they deliver these baked goods to their new neighbors.  What a personal way to make this elderly couple feel welcomed to the neighborhood.  Great team work!!!

Act of Kindness #15
G.C. took 5 extra minutes at the end of her work day to connect with her students. She explains that the teachers all take the students to the bus and most of the teachers have "tuned out" by this point of the day. They push the students to the bus without much attention or they are wrapped up in conversations with the other teachers.  G.H. said she never noticed how disconnected everyone was until recently.  So she made a conscious effort this week to wave goodbye, smile, and acknowledge the children as they were loading the buses. She said the students really responded well to this extra effort.  Who knows maybe this very simple act brightened a child's day???

Act of Kindness #12 and #13

L.L. tells me that she participated in our challenge this week by doing not one but two acts of kindness!! For her first good deed she made a work house call for an elderly employee who needed help with the education system.  This women was thrilled and I am sure touched that L.L. went out of her way to make her day a little easier!!!  L.L. also took some time out of her day to send an "thinking of you" note to a friend that recently lost her husband.

I am reminded again that good deeds don't have to cost money, don't have to take a ton of time, and that they REALLY can be simple and easy to do. L.L's good deeds clearly had a positive effect on someone's day!

Act of kindness #11

M.B.J. was shopping with me today and instantly noticed one big yummy M & M cookie that was neatly packaged.  Now I am not surprised that this attracted my little one but her response to the cookie is what surprised me.  She didn't ask to buy this for herself but instead to buy as one of her acts of kindness.  She proudly told me that this would be a nice treat for our neighbor lady, as a thank you for being so nice to our family.  

Ahhh...its sinking in...my 4 year old is thinking about how to make someone else's day a little better.  Makes me a proud mama!!!

M.M. found these treasures and bought them to give to children whom have been admitted to the local hospital.  The best part of this act of kindness is that M.M. arranged for a small group of us to personally deliver this package to the hospital. While we were not able to give them out to the children directly we were able to meet with one of the child advocates.  We learned that each child that is admitted to the hospital receives a stuffed "lovey" to help comfort them during their stay.  She told us that our donation would make an instant impact on a child that needs some comfort. I was proud to be a small part of this good deed!

K.M. submitted the following to me:
"I sent handwritten notes to 7 different people.  They are all each facing difficult and somewhat overwhelming issues.  Some of these people have been my friends forever, some passed in and out of my daily life and one is an acquaintance that has shown great kindness in her work with children.  I don't have frequent contact with any of these people but none the less it was important to me that they know I am thinking of them. "

ACT OF KINDNESS #9

E.M. did an awesome act of kindness with her friend shortly after the tragedy in Newtown.  The two girls wrote sympathy cards to the families that lost a loved one.  They were mailed to the families with lots of well wishes and prayers tucked within the envelopes.

the kindness is pouring in...

Act of Kindness #3
M.M. informed me today that he participated in his first act of kindness for 2013.  He was in line at a store and the lady in front of him had a huge box full of candy.  He commented that she must be having a fun party with all of that candy. She told him that she was buying the sweet treats to send to the troops in Afghanistan.  After hearing how much her bill was she commented out loud, "oh that is a little more than I thought it would be".  M.M. very thoughtfully pulled out $10 to help lessen her total. She was so flustered by his unexpected good deed that she struggled to complete the transaction.  The act of kindness ended with a hug, high five, a few tears, and maybe even an inspired teenage clerk??

Act of Kindness #4:
C.H. also submitted her first act of kindness for 2013.  She tells me that after a recent snowstorm, she snow blowed her neighbor's sidewalk and driveway.  He is an elderly man and has mobility issues and the 16" of snow would have been more than he could have handled.  Her extra efforts surely made a huge impact on that man's day!

The first act of kindness is in....

#1 Act of Kindness is in the books for our group!  A.H. so graciously has been "gifting" her embroidery time/talents to various people since the start of the new year. She has been passing out baby bibs and monogramed bags to deserving family friends and neighbors.  I think those of us who have been blessed with a piece of work from A.H. would all agree that it is a really wonderful treat!!! Great work A.H....Thanks for getting us started on this journey!

My challenge to you...

Ok now you know the story. Here is my challenge to you...Let's each vow to do at least 26 random acts of kindness during 2013.  These acts can be as big or as simple as you would like to make them. You can spend a ton of money but you don't have to spend a dime. Get your kids involved..have them come up with their own #26 acts of kindness. Be creative, Be inspired, and be proud of your actions.

 I only have two stipulations for you to follow...1. all of the acts must be for someone outside of our "immediate" family. I think we all do great things for each other all of the time so it would be fun to spread the love to others.  2. I would ask that you email me as you complete your tasks so that I can post your good deed for the participating members to see. This will allow us to keep a running record of the positive difference we have made as a group.

I promise to stay on top of this blog so we can all continue to be inspired throughout the year. I am excited to get started...are you?
